GGFL Welcomes US and Cross-Border Tax Principal
GGFL’s US and Cross-border Tax Principal, Monica Martinez, had spent her entire accounting career at a “Big Four” firm before joining GGFL last October.
Leaving the world of the “Big Four” accounting firms, where Monica had built her career since her days as a university student, was no easy decision. She was leaving on the best of terms with her former employer, but was ready for the next stage, to find a new challenge and a new opportunity where she could bring her expertise in providing a wide range of cross-border tax services to a diverse client base. Choosing the new firm would not be easy.
Opportunity arose when GGFL was looking to hire our first full-time US and Cross-border tax specialist. On paper, Monica quickly realized that GGFL would be a perfect fit, but she needed to make sure she was making the right decision. She diligently researched the firm, and asked for the opportunity to speak with as many of our partners, and current and former GGFL employees, as possible.
“I thought that, maybe along the way, a red flag could appear that would make me question the opportunity at hand, but the opposite happened,” she says.

GGFL’s focus on work-life balance also appealed to Monica: “I like to see that my colleagues leave work at a reasonable hour to go have dinner with their families. I also like that fitness and health is a big priority for many at the firm, starting with the managing partner, Deborah Bourchier, who invited me to cycle with her and her friends the week that I started. Others are fellow runners and triathletes – some practice yoga, tennis, or even play on GGFL’s soccer team. All of this was very impressive to me!”
GGFL’s Westboro location is also an obvious perk with its many cafes, great restaurants, and sports stores, including the Ottawa River Parkway, only minutes away, that allows those inclined to cycle or run to work.
