For GGFL Manager Renzo Yparraguirre, weekends aren’t just for rest—they’re for making a difference.
Since 2022, Renzo has been a committed volunteer at the SPCA de l’Outaouais in Gatineau, where he and his fiancée spend up to six hours every weekend walking dogs, supporting adoptions, cleaning animal spaces, and pitching in wherever help is needed.
“We help get the animals ready to be adopted,” Renzo explains. “That means making sure they’re comfortable around people, have the basics like food, blankets, and toys, and are getting that human interaction that prepares them for life in a home.”
It’s not always glamorous. The work includes everything from folding laundry to deep-cleaning kennels. But for Renzo, it’s more than worth it. “There’s so much fulfillment,” he says. “Seeing a dog that’s been in the shelter for weeks finally get adopted—it’s hard to describe the feeling.”

That fulfillment inspired him to get even more involved. In addition to working directly with the animals, Renzo now helps with SPCA fundraising events and is looking to lend his accounting skills to the shelter’s budgeting and nonprofit tax filings. “If I can help behind the scenes too, that’s a win,” he says.
His journey into animal rescue began shortly after writing his CPA exam. With some extra time and a shared desire to give back, Renzo and his fiancée—both accountants—began looking for ways to support their community together. Knowing her love for animals and wanting to prepare for the dog they would soon be welcoming into their own home, they reached out to the SPCA. “They welcomed us right away,” Renzo says. “It felt like the perfect fit.”
That warm welcome has stayed with him. “The community is amazing. The staff and volunteers come from all walks of life—students, retirees, even ex-military. Everyone’s there because they care.”
Renzo’s passion has already inspired others. After speaking about his experience at a GGFL all-staff meeting, a colleague approached him to ask how to get involved. Within days, she had signed up with a similar organization in Ottawa.
“I think sometimes people worry they don’t have time,” he says, “but there are so many ways to contribute. You don’t have to be at the shelter every weekend. You can foster, donate, or just help spread the word.”
For Renzo, volunteering has become a way to recharge — especially during busy season. “It’s the perfect reset,” he says. “You step away from the stress, focus on the animals, and start the week refreshed and ready to go.”
And with plans to begin fostering animals at home, it’s safe to say that Renzo’s commitment is only growing.
“Giving back doesn’t have to be complicated,” he adds. “Sometimes, it starts with just showing up.”
